Boots on the Ground: Our Community Sends 10 Pairs of Jim Green Boots to Zimbabwe’s All-Female Anti-Poaching K-9 Teams
Share
At Ranger Guardians NPC, we believe that real conservation happens one piece of well-chosen equipment at a time. In September 2025, thanks to the incredible support of our donors, loyal coffee customers, and everyone who purchased our merchandise, we were able to deliver ten pairs of Jim Green boots to the Anti-Poaching K-9 Foundation Trust in Harare, Zimbabwe.
These boots are now with the women who form the heart of an innovative all-female K-9 anti-poaching unit — dedicated handlers protecting Zimbabwe’s endangered wildlife alongside their canine partners.
We are proud to share this milestone and extend our deepest thanks to everyone who made it possible.
From South Africa to Zimbabwe: Closing the Equipment Gap
As an organisation, Ranger Guardians exists for one clear purpose: to equip Africa’s anti-poaching rangers with the gear they need to do their dangerous, essential work. Many rangers, especially in underfunded units, still operate with inadequate boots, uniforms, and equipment. In harsh African bush conditions — long patrols, thorny terrain, extreme heat, and constant risk — the right footwear can mean the difference between staying on duty and being sidelined by injury.
That’s why we focus on practical, high-impact support. Through our Bushwookie coffee sales, branded merchandise, and targeted fundraising campaigns, we turn everyday supporter actions into tangible tools for the frontline. This latest boot donation is a perfect example of that model in action.
Our Partners in the Mission
This shipment would not have reached its destination without strong collaboration. We extend our sincere gratitude to:
- Jim Green Footwear for arranging the courier and continuing their long-standing commitment to conservation through the Ranger Boot Project.
- Frontline Wildlife Guardians for their generous financial contribution that helped make the donation possible.
- Karen Strydom for safely storing the boots in South Africa and securing an additional two pairs that also made their way to Zimbabwe.
Together, we are ensuring that essential gear moves quickly and efficiently across borders to where it is needed most.
The Anti-Poaching K-9 Foundation Trust: Women Leading the Fight
The boots have been gratefully received by the Anti-Poaching K-9 Foundation Trust, a registered Zimbabwean non-profit with a powerful dual mission: protecting wildlife and natural resources while creating meaningful educational and employment opportunities for women.
Their all-female K-9 units represent a forward-thinking approach to conservation. The women undergo comprehensive training with their dogs in Harare, mastering scent detection, tracking, patrol tactics, and community engagement. These teams are proving exceptionally effective in the battle against poaching. Trained detection dogs excel at locating hidden snares, following poacher trails, identifying illegal wildlife products, and alerting handlers to danger — often dramatically reducing poaching incidents in the areas they cover.
Zimbabwe’s wildlife continues to face intense pressure from organised syndicates targeting elephants, rhinos, lions, and pangolins. By professionalising female K-9 handlers, the Foundation not only strengthens anti-poaching efforts but also empowers women with skills, income, and status in their communities. These handlers become ambassadors for conservation, inspiring local support and helping shift mindsets from exploitation to protection.
The Jim Green boots we sent are purpose-built for this demanding work. Crafted from ethically sourced buffalo leather, they offer the perfect combination of durability, lightweight comfort, ankle support, and breathability — exactly what is required for long days on patrol. For a handler, reliable boots mean fewer injuries, longer operational periods, and greater confidence in the field.
Official Acknowledgement and Impact
On 23 September 2025, we received a formal acknowledgement letter from Peter Maguwu, Executive Director of the Anti-Poaching K-9 Foundation Trust. The letter confirms receipt of the ten pairs of boots and expresses heartfelt gratitude:
“Partners like you are vital to the continued success of our mission to protect the Zimbabwe wildlife from extinction… The contribution will make a tangible difference in our efforts to protect wildlife.”
The Foundation has assured us that the boots will go directly to the handlers for their intended purpose. Knowing the equipment is already being put to use gives our entire team at Ranger Guardians immense satisfaction.
Why Supporting Female K-9 Units Matters
Investing in women-led conservation teams delivers results on multiple levels. Research across Africa shows that including women in anti-poaching units often leads to stronger community relationships, better intelligence gathering, and higher overall effectiveness. These handlers serve as powerful role models, demonstrating that conservation careers are open to women and creating a positive ripple effect in rural communities.
When we equip these teams with proper gear, we multiply their impact. Better-equipped handlers can patrol more effectively, train more consistently, respond faster to threats, and protect larger areas. Over time, this translates into healthier wildlife populations, stronger ecosystems, and more sustainable tourism economies that benefit local people.
A Proven Model for Practical Conservation
This donation highlights the approach that defines Ranger Guardians: identify a genuine need, mobilise our community through accessible channels, partner with like-minded organisations, and deliver support directly to the people doing the hard work on the ground.
We are already seeing the results. New campaigns are underway. More rangers and K-9 handlers will receive the equipment they deserve in the coming months.
None of this would be possible without you — our supporters. Whether you bought a bag of coffee, purchased merchandise, made a direct donation, or simply shared our posts, you played a direct role in putting these boots on the ground. Your contributions are literally helping women and their dogs defend Zimbabwe’s precious wildlife.

Looking Ahead
At Ranger Guardians, we remain committed to closing the equipment gap for Africa’s conservation heroes. The ten pairs of boots delivered to Zimbabwe are not the end of the story — they are one more step in a much larger movement.
We are deeply grateful to every donor, customer, and partner who stood with us on this project. Because of you, female K-9 handlers in Zimbabwe now have stronger footing in their vital work. The rhinos, elephants, and entire ecosystems they protect are safer today.
